Axolotls (Ambystoma mexicanum) are a species of salamander that are native to Lake Xochimilco and the canals of Mexico City. They are known for their ability to retain their larval characteristics into adulthood, a phenomenon known as neoteny. In axolotls, this means that they retain their gills, fins, and the ability to regenerate lost body parts throughout their lives, rather than transitioning to a terrestrial form like most other salamanders do. They can regenerate their limbs, spinal cord, heart, and even parts of their brain. This makes them a popular subject in scientific research, particularly in the fields of developmental biology and regenerative medicine.

In the wild, axolotls are critically endangered. They are threatened by predation from invasive fish species and pollution from sewage runoff into the canals of Mexico City.
