Kōlea (Pluvialis fulva) are incredible migratory shorebirds that spend the winter in Hawaiʻi and the summer months in their breeding grounds in Alaska or Siberia. They have one of the longest migrations of any bird species, and fly over 4000 kilometers (2500 miles) between their feeding grounds (Hawaiʻi) and breeding grounds (Alaska or Siberia). This kōlea is sporting his breeding plumage, which can be seen on the kōlea in Hawaiʻi in the spring as they prepare for their migration. Doesn't he look so handsome in his tuxedo?
Kōlea have adapted to human development quite well, and are often seen in lawns, parks, golf courses, or even sleeping on rooftops at night. This makes them a very popular bird, and their return to Hawaiʻi in the fall is much celebrated! They are quite territorial, chasing off even larger birds, and have a high fidelity to their territory, returning to the same spot year after year.
If you are a big kōlea fan, I encourage you to participate in the Kōlea Count, a community science project that surveys kōlea populations throughout the main Hawaiian islands. More information can be found at https://www.koleacount.org/
