Kōlea (Pluvialis fulva) are a migratory shorebird that travel over 4000 kilometers (or 2500 miles) to Hawai'i from their summer breeding grounds in the arctic. They use Hawai'i as a winter feeding grounds. They have adapted well to human development, and can often be found in the grass lawns of parks and golf courses. This makes them a popular bird with the general public, and their return to Hawai'i in the fall is much celebrated!

This kōlea is sporting his summer breeding plumage, which can be seen on the kōlea in Hawai'i in the spring as they prepare for their migration. Doesn't he look so handsome in his tuxedo?
