Manta rays are one of the largest fish in the ocean, with an average wingspan of 18 feet (5.5 meters). The largest recorded manta ray had a wingspan of over 29 feet (8.8 meters)! They also have the largest brain-to-body-mass ratio of any fish. Mantas are filter feeders, meaning they feed on tiny plankton, fish eggs, and small fish by filtering them out of the water as they swim. The underside of a manta's body has unique markings and colorations that can be used to identify the individual, like a fingerprint!

Mantas are popular to see in Hawai'i, and can be attracted to humans by lights at night, because lights in the water attract plankton, their favorite food. If you are lucky enough to see one in the wild, be sure not to touch- mantas have a slimy mucous coating that protects them from infections, and human touch can damage it.
