Axolotls (Ambystoma mexicanum) are a species of salamander that are native to the lake Xochimilco and canals in Mexico City. They are known for their ability to retain their larval characteristics into adulthood, a phenomenon known as neoteny. In axolotls, this means that they retain their gills, fins, and the ability to regenerate lost body parts throughout their lives, rather than transitioning to a terrestrial form like most other salamanders do. They can regenerate their limbs, spinal cord, heart, and even parts of their brain. This makes them a popular subject in scientific research, particularly in the fields of developmental biology and regenerative medicine.
In the wild, axolotls are critically endangered due to habitat destruction and pollution, and are now only found in the wild in a few canals of Xochimilco. They are still common in laboratory settings and are often kept as pets. They have a carnivorous diet and can live up to 15 years in captivity.
