Nēnē, the native Hawaiian goose, are the state bird of Hawaii and a huge conservation success story! They are an endemic species to Hawai‘i, meaning they are found no where else in the world. In 1952, there were as few as 30 individuals left. Through captive breeding programs, their numbers are now up to an estimated 3,862 birds and can be found in the wild on Kaua‘i, Maui, Moloka‘i, O‘ahu, and Hawai‘i island! Nēnē play an important part in the ecosystem as seed dispersers for native berries like ʻōhelo, pūkiawe, and kūkaenēnē.
