Couldn't load pickup availability
Nēnē (Branta sandvicensis), the native Hawaiian goose, are the state bird of Hawaii and a huge conservation success story! They are an endemic species to Hawai‘i, meaning they are found no where else in the world. In 1952, there were as few as 30 individuals left. Through captive breeding programs, their numbers are now up to an estimated 3,862 birds across the islands!
Nēnē play an important role in the ecosystem as seed dispersers for native plants like ʻōhelo, pūkiawe, and kūkaenēnē. Kūkaenēnē is also called ʻaiakanēnē, which translates to “nene droppings” and “food of the nene”, respectively. This is an ode to their important job of eating native fruits and spreading their seeds in their poop!
