Whale sharks are the largest fish species in the world, growing up to 40 feet (12 meters) in length and weighing over 20 tons. Despite their size, whale sharks are gentle giants that feed primarily on plankton and small fish. They can consume up to 60 pounds (27 kg) of plankton per day!

Whale sharks have a distinctive spotted pattern, with white or pale-yellow spots on a dark background. These spots are unique to each individual, and can be used to identify them.

Whale sharks are found in all tropical and warm-temperate oceans around the world, and migrate to different regions to feed and breed. In Hawaii, whale sharks are usually found near the surface in open waters, where they feed on schools of small fish and plankton blooms. They are considered to be a vulnerable species, primarily due to overfishing, accidental bycatch, and habitat degradation. They are protected by international conservation agreements and national laws in many countries. In Hawaii, they are protected by state and federal regulations that prohibit their capture or harassment.
